For Hercules Bellville, Rob Gretton and Tony Wilson
I am flattered by the invitation to show at Arnaud's gallery. I cannot remember
who introduced us. But we have become friends and discussed doing a
turtlesalon. when i sent my current film, P.S. BEIRUT, Arnaud was touched and
wanted to see more of my work. I happened to have a dvd of SOUVENIR in
Paris. This was my first work in public and played several festivals and was
tried to distribute in the U.S. Arnaud picked up the Ezra Pound and Carl
Andre's poetry. That meant a lot for me. And he wanted to present it. This was
shown at Belfort festival where I met Mrs. André Bazin. I was interested in
Bazin's never made documentary which was published in Cahiers du Cinéma. I began
my sickness in Poitiers where i was filming with a dancer in Romanesque
churches in that area. This was a begining of getting to know André Bazin in
some way and i got sick there. That continues in Ireland and London and
Manchester where i saw several doctors who finally learned what caused my
apparent sickness but i went in to London hospital for 3 months but took 4 more
years to discover what was going on, Mitochondrial disease, and keeps me away
from tonight here, but not in body but well in spirit.
Arnaud is also showing some music videos where i learned to make film. I was
lucky to be with New Order whose manager Rob Gretton, who let me do what I want
which Tony Wilson allowed. He was A Certain Ratio's manager and Rob's partner
in Factory Records. I proposed to do a show in NY when clubs were saying if
they play here they cannot play there. I did not know if not enough or too many
people would come to the Ukranian National Home. A friend Barry Rebo came with
professional video equipment and we recorded the show. I was able to get the
cameramen to not move too much and focus on what he shoots and was able to edit
a wonderful work that many years later got me a job curating at Witte de With
(for Home Screen Home) because the director Bartomeu Marà loved the vhs
released as Taras Shevchenko. A moment from this video is part of P.S. BEIRUT
where Bernard Sumner sings a lyrics that were never recorded but fit my film.
Also the fact that 1981 also fit by chance.
Benjamin’s Briefcase was a feature film which i was making with Etel Adnan. I
was busy working 3 years finding a producer and getting close and the producer
interested died. I went on Christmas 2004 to Beirut to get lost in the film and
had a lucky situation for a place to stay, Etel will be there and Fouad ElKoury
who speaks in P.S. BEIRUT about Hariri's death to Etel off camera (like a
ghost) was also to be there and i videotaped a lot. Returned to Paris and
edited what you see tonight by myself on my laptop. Markus Acher, the composer
(from The Notwist band) had asked me to send him some 45 vinyl records and he
used them in the main tune which opens the film and i used his work to help me
edit. What happened in Paris was I felt i was an artist again, not needing a
producer, camera or sound, only Markus and like Tarkovsky I felt i was
"Sculpting in Time."
Now to show the work here is a proper place though i would like to have
SOUVENIR shown in a cinema, P.S. BEIRUT as well. Thank you Arnaud. And Hercules
Bellville whom I met when working with Jonathan Demme on The Perfect Kiss and
he was in the hospital with me, part of turtle and paid for my going back to
Paris as a resident at Cité Internationale des Arts where i made one edit at
the end and realized it a chapter in a personal story and my illness will be a
part of my film. In hospital when i felt i may be able to continue working on
my film my illness was a corporeal civil war which is why it must be part of my
film. I have just realized a sculpture piece at the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts was called Safety Zone and Turtle was called this due to a
safety zone during the civil war in Lebanon at the border of Israel. It became
a sanctuary of the almost extinct Mediteranean turtle. Thank you Rob Gretton
supporting my video productions and Tony for taking me in to Factory and
visiting me in hospital (Rob was dead and Tony has died sadly).
I present TRIBECA my first film which premiered at film festivals this year as
it had been lost for years, TEMPTATION as my first video for New Order i
directed and not only produced, RUN by Robert Frank my favorite video for New
Order that is not well known because the record company at that time chose a
different release. It also stars David Warrilow whom Samuel Beckett wrote for
and he performed. And GETTING AWAY WITH IT which is never shown because the
artist declined it. Chris Marker made a poetic film and made the computer
graphics for SOUVENIR. He is a good friend and personal favorite filmmaker. He
also designed the turtle logo.
They may play other videos and you can read about making them at
www.kinoteca.net and please visit www.turtlesalon.com
I need to add that I asked Lawrence Weiner and Ned Richardson to make posters
before the show was proposed but I wanted to show in France, and having Peter
Saville's poster. Peter is an artist who did all of Joy Division and New
Order's artwork.
Michael H Shamberg (12.12.2010)
* Turtle an anarchic salon, "an open and chaotic
network of diverse but interconnecting ideas, people, projects, events and
venues" started by filmmaker Michael H Shamberg in London in 2006, with
subsequent events in Düsseldorf, Paris, New York and Baltimore.
