A correspondence about the exhibition
… The background to the video is that Michael had in his loft in NYC a Lawrence
Weiner piece; BUILT UP ON, painted on the wall. He both sold the piece, and had
to give up the loft in the same time period. It was necessary to paint over the
piece before surrendering the keys to the landlord.
I organized the move out of the loft, with the help of a long-time
friend Mike Clarren, and we had help also from Ola Manana, whose work was in
Turtle. We worked day and night for a long weekend to make it happen. To
commemorate the passing of both the loft and the artwork, we decided that Mike
would tape me doing a 'performance painting' over BUILT UP ON until it was
covered.
The video is unedited except for beginning and ending titles, and
lasts about 38 minutes. It can be quite boring if you are expecting something
to happen, but if you let it play in the background and do not expect too much,
certain elements appear. There are traces of Beckett, slow motion comedy, and
of course there is the metamorphosis of the painting. I hope you enjoy it, but
I don't think it is suitable for a formal screening.
… There is also a high quality print of the Beckett projection from the Turtle
Web Performance.
One thing about this work is that it is built off of a photograph
of Samuel Beckett which was given to me by Michael Shamberg. The photo was
given to him by a woman in Paris who Beckett allowed to follow him around and
take pictures, but Michael could not remember her name. There was no signature
or copyright notice anywhere on the print (including the back) and I could not
find anything on the internet. I think my use of the photo, particularly in the
small photos, can be considered "fair use," but I would like it very
much if there was a way to contact her, or if she somehow came by the gallery.
… As to what the postcards represent - the oddness of the question probably
pales next to the oddness of the answer. Fortunately I am tired - I chased away
the last people who were interested in them with a too long and too strange an
answer! And it changes over time.
Many years ago I was interested in blurring the line between
figure, and landscape and character (as in letter) which is how the style
evolved, but over time the postcards have turned mostly into landscapes.
They represent a journey and sometimes a fleeting glimpse, as out
the window of a train. You could say they represent our world, but not
necessarily (or perhaps necessarily not) from an entirely human perspective. At
times, they seem to me more real than the world my senses deliver, and often I
have no idea where they come from. Other times they are more closely linked to
ordinary life - I think this set has a range.
Another underlying idea that everything is at some level data, and
can be mapped or projected in any way. Also the firm conviction that what we
think we are doing is not what we are really doing, and that perhaps a truer
(or more instructive) view of what goes on in the world is found on scales greater
and lesser than our own - or perhaps that the self is not the primary unity.
… i just remembered this, and it is where i was going to start...
i made some test cards last year (all given away) with the text : «
smoke, clouds ,waves, data, info, pollution, music » which at the time I
considered my subject matter.
the dot drawings are concerned with landscape, data, maps, flows etc. perhaps a
little obvious, but the narrative/map/landscape/design all emerges from how you
"connect the dots."
i have spent quite a bit of time driving around the country, for one reason and
another - both on the "imperial freeway" and the back roads. i became
comfortable taking pictures while driving and must have thousands
all the photographic landscapes were taken from the car. i included the ones
which interest me at the moment - all blurred or distorted in some way. i do
not hold that they are great photographs (except perhaps one) but i wanted to
add color to offset the monochromatic work - though i ended up including a
couple of larger palette paintings anyway.
i mentioned the postcards arranged as words, together a poem. (or each set a
poem, or each one a poem - a matter of scale) and also that they had become
more like landscapes over the years.
if more or less in a line they could also be a horizon line, or shore line with
things happening above and below - And of course there could be rocks interrupting
the shoreline… so the poem from a distance becomes a landscape as
anything from the right distance becomes a landscape.
i think i sent two [very] representational landscapes, one - the only oil
painting, is framed and quite small and very still. if the other work becomes
a landscape i imagine it somewhere above everything else - a
reference point. a small fixed object in the "sky." but that is just
an imagination-
i did a number of small representational oil landscapes from 2000-2003 but
could not continue after the invasion of iraq, though i hope to return to the
practice on an occasional basis. it makes me think of both a star [or object]
in the sky, and boring a hole into the earth.
then, as now, i was concerned with scale, history, hidden conflict, implied
conflict. the only requirement of my landscapes is that they include technology
- usually related to energy (or data) and distribution.
i have been working in the form a little with watercolor, and you will see
(hopefully) some of the results.
here is a line from a piece i have been working on, but hasn't quite come
together-"I remember riding down the Imperial
Freeway" - an absurd nostalgia, told from the future.
the sight of airplanes reflecting the sun in the sky always gets my attention -
as does the gradual merging of their contrails (condensation trails) with the
natural weather. I have some nice photos but never got anything else to work
out. i just remembered this, trying to think what it was about
"objects in the sky" thinking first stars, but that wasn't it.
neither are planes, but perhaps if you combine the two...

RICHARDSON
Correspondance sur l’exposition
Je me
me rappelle avoir pris l’Imperial Freeway » — une nostalgie absurde, dite Ă
