Sonaria
pour violoncelle
non-accompagné
Sonaria pourrait

DAVID GORDON
He Now
Breathes
“He now breathes
abreast the
bread-blessed Thesprots
as
others’ givings lavished his
travels,
yet past Thinak’s
town
the wine-whipped sea
swallowed his men
and
death-hollowed hull
since their
knives had slit
the Heliocentric’s beeves,
but as he gripped the keel
a wave pitched him
to sky-folk among the
Phaekon,
who gift-heaped him
and would hie him home,
when in his eyes:
to circuit earth would earn more
worth.
But Pheidon sent
me first to Doulik:
to reveal his
wealth
could nourish his offspring
from birth to
earth,
for ten
life-spans.
Then your man
straight to
Dodona’s oak-doom,
aware of Sky’s design
to wise him home
manifest as sky’s fire,
or in disguise.
But he’s near,
and by month’s end: here.”
Words interweaved
meaning
alive in her lips:
“Sweet to the hearer’s ears—
while my heart intuits the
absolute.
No. It just can’t
be. Never.
Still, you girls rinse this
rover’sfeet,
and build his bed
with warms and
thick-bodied wool
that wrapped in
glow
of wrestler’s ram
he rouse at
cockcrow
to
sun-throne’s gold.
Then washed,
balmed,
and next to Telemach,
he can muse how
food tunes his tooth
under my
Brasennose roof beam,
and whoever
afflicts
his heart’s
feelings
withers his own
wedding-day’s bed.
For how ken if I out-do other wives
in mind’s tact
and sense-weft,
if squalid in sordid
rags
you take your meal at my home’s boards ?
Man’s
days span
but the sprint of a wink
but if he harass heart’ hearth
he makes harsh his
Bacchic-tools;
even his name rears ridicule.
But good be his
mode’s
lodestar
when bale’s highest,
boot is nighest:
from such clay
buildsman kind’s breathing-stay.”
Then he:
“Duty-imbued lady,
know: “Surcoats
and spreads’ sheen
grieved my seeing
when first I
turned
from
Crete’s white flaked braes
with oars’s
lengths.
Will stretch out to fetch breath
as in unslept
yore-nights,
and aspire to dawn’s regal seats.
Nor do foot bathes charm-sparktheheart
and
no girls serving you
shall touch my
feet;
unless some sage-wary
old woman’s
endurings
sum up my own:
I’d not shrink
from her fingers.
