About Anna Faroqhi’s Work Anna Faroqhi was born in Berlin. She studied music as well as mathematics / physics in Berlin and Frankfurt / Main, after that she studied film at Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film Munich. Anna Faroqhi lives and works as an author / filmmaker / artist in Berlin. Since 2004 she has held a teaching position at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin. She is also a freelance teacher for documentary film, among other subjects. Anna Faroqhi’s work has been presented and exhibited on an international level: Variations on the Everyday – an installation of illustrations and video at Manifesta7 in Bolzano, Italy (2008); Das Nötigste – an installation of illustrations and video at the Festival Bollwerk Belluard in Fribourg, Switzerland (2010); Weltreiche erblühten und fielen – a historical comic publication to celebrate the 650th anniversary of Neukölln (2010). In her work the tension between public and private perceptions, which are expressed in videos and illustrations, are dominant themes for the artist. Since 2003, Anna Faroqhi works in collaboration with her husband and work partner Haim Peretz.

Films of Anna Faroqhi shown at exhibition: INDIA – GERMANY: A Common Life (2006) A Common Life is an attempt at understanding the artist’s Indian grandfather’s life story, a story of migration which was influenced by political decisions, hope and bad luck. The story of Abdul Qudus Faroqhi can be mirrored in the life story of another Indian who had thought he could benefit from the German Nazi Reich – Subhas Chandra Bose, a man who believed, My enemy’s enemy is my friend.
ISRAEL: House and Desert (2005) A stone building in Jerusalem with a hut from the 1948 war of liberation against the British in the garden, ramshackle container buildings of the poor in the outskits of the city, a Bedouin tent, an alternative settler’s house in the West Bank, a Thai foreign workers’ makeshift dwelling on New Year’s Eve, a Jewish-Moroccan family’s home on Shabbat. The film explores various houses in Israel and the inner and outer borders each form of a dwelling builds. Waiting (2003) The narrative describes one week of uncertainty and waiting for the War on Terror – a war of the US against Iraq – to take place while being in Israel. Everyday life and the absurdity of war as part of this everyday life is being depicted. In a Strange Land (2006) On Shabbat, the small street Neve Sha’anan in Tel Aviv is bustling with life. Foreign workers from Russia, Romania, Thailand, Africa and Malaysia live and enjoy their day off from work here. Their status in the country is not at all stable.
USA: the 4th of july (2002) The 4th of July, the American independence day, is the background to a love story with complications narrated through a voice over, title cards and documentary images of the fireworks. Dependence and the urge for independence are being explored. Pieme Pahite (2009) Pieme Pahite is the American Indian name for the Los Angeles River, a water which in its long story was denied its existence in many ways. Stations of the 80 km long water are being filmed. The story of a water is told that first was tamed and fenced, then forgotten, then slowly being brought back to life. In this process of revitalization the fences are kept. There always is the fear of how the wrong people (the homeless and poor) might benefit from the newly discovered river banks. INDE – ALLEMAGNE: A Common Life (2006) A Common Life est une tentative de comprendre l’histoire de la vie du grand-père indien de l’artiste, une histoire de migration qui a été influencée par les décisions politiques, l’espoir et la malchance. L’histoire d’Abdul Qudus Faroqhi peut être reflétée dans l’histoire de la vie d’un autre Indien qui avait pensé pouvoir bénéficier du Reich allemand nazi — Subhas Chandra Bose, un homme qui croyait que L’ennemi de mon ennemi est mon ami.
ISRAËL: House and Desert (2005) Un immeuble en pierre avec une hutte de la guerre de libération de 1948 contre les Britanniques dans le jardin, des constructions délabrées de container du pauvre dans la banlieue de la ville, une tente bédouine, une maison alternative de colon sur la rive ouest, une habitation de fortune de travailleur étranger thaïlandais lors du réveillon du jour de l’an, la maison d’une famille judéo-marocaine pendant le Shabbat. Le film explore diverses maisons en Israël et les frontières intérieures et extérieures que chaque forme d’un logement construit.
Waiting (2003) Le récit décrit une semaine d’incertitude et d’attente pour la guerre sur la terreur – une guerre des États-Unis contre l’Iraq – qui a lieu pendant un séjour en Israël. Le vie de tous les jours et l’absurdité de la guerre comme partie de cette vie de tous les jours est décrite ici.
In a Strange Land (2006) Pendant le Shabbat, la petite rue Neve Sh’anan à Tel Aviv est débordante de vie. Des travailleurs étrangers de Russie, de Roumanie, de Thaïlande, d’Afrique et de Malaisie y vivent et jouissent de leur jour de congé. Leur statut dans le pays n’est pas stable du tout.
USA: the 4th of july (2002) Le 4 juillet, jour de l’indépendance américaine, est l’arrière-plan d’une histoire d’amour avec les complications racontées par une voix off, des intertitres et des images documentaires du feu d’artifice. La dépendance et l’urgence pour l’indépendance y sont explorées.
Pieme Pahite (2009) Pieme Pahite est le nom indien-américain pour le fleuve Los Angeles, une eau qui dans sa longue histoire s’est vue dénier l’existence de nombreuses façons. Des stations de 80 km de long de l’eau y sont filmées. L’histoire d’une eau est racontée qui fut d’abord domestiquée et clôturée, puis oubliée, et ensuite a été lentement ramenée à la vie. Dans ce processus de revitalisation les clôtures sont maintenues. Il y a toujours la crainte de savoir comment les fausses personnes (les sans-logis et les pauvres) pourraient profiter des rives du fleuve nouvellement découvertes. |
